How to Achieve Your 2020 Goals In This Covid 19 Pandemic Period

Each one of us before this covid 19 pandemic has one thing or another that we wanted to achieve in this year whether great or small. We had deep-rooted dreams and hopes for the year with an intense yearning for greater accomplishments not just mere survival. However, with the advent of covid 19 pandemic, working from home, and social distancing, it seems like many career, business, academics and other personal goals have been mulling over for some time now.

There is a greener way to make your dreams come to pass irrespective of where your start point is, what your situation is, where you work or live.

Here are some selected top actions that will help you achieve your goals in this season.

1. Reconsider, Revisit and kick start your goals:

Firstly, consider this covid 19 pandemic year as an opportunity to start afresh. It doesn’t matter what time of the year it is, you can begin again. Your goals can’t continue to be abstract. They have to emerge.

You can use SMARTER method to set your 2020 goals. There are several explanations of what SMARTER stands for, but the essence is this – goals should be:

S)  → Specific

Become specific about what you anticipated to achieve. You have to become particular about your goal so as to move it from the abstract into reality and materialization.

To be specific is to write down your goals on a piece of paper, a screen, a white board or choose a tool or application that suits your personality (Habakkuk 2:2). Don’t write general and blanket statements which may offer insufficient direction. The more detailed you are, the more likely you are to apply and revise your goals in the future.

  • Example: “I will publish 2 journal articles with a renowned publisher within two months after completing my laboratory bench work” rather than ” I will publish journal articles after completing my bench work”. The first one is motivating; the second one still has a get-out clause “allowing” you to succeed even if you didn’t publish any article.

Afterwards, post your written down goals at a visible and strategic place like your desk, walls, computer screen, bathroom mirror, refrigerator etc., where you can have eye contact with them every day. This will constantly remind you of what you intend to achieve.

 Things to write down include

  • What you want to achieve?
  • How your life will look like when you have reached that goal?
  • Who are the people and what are the things that you need to achieve your goal?
  • What are you doing during the day? i.e.  Actions you need to take
  • What habits do you have?
  • What time are you waking up?

M)→ Meaningful and measurable

Ensure that your goals are meaningful, measurable and trackable. Any goal with a profound meaning is more likely to be achieved than superficial ones.  For example, if you want to own a house around Waikiki beach in Honolulu for the prestige it gives, you can ignore your likelihoods for success.

You can’t just desire things because you feel like desiring them. You can’t crave to shade your weight or generate more income because those are goals you’ve continuously looked for. Why have you always craved for them? Take a moment to write them down

Meaningful goals encompass things like family, faith in God, freedom, security, country, love, service for God and humanity.

A) → Achievable

Focus on goals that are achievable. When you select achievable goals, you will not only achieve them, but you can also cultivate several new impetuses in the process.

Start with your short-term goals. Locate those goals that are deep and big, but not difficult or impossible to achieve and plan for the next 12 months. This will act as landmarks or milestones towards your long-term goals (much bigger goals). Thereafter, create a considerable action plan that will help you see things through.

R) → Relevant

Make the goals relevant. The goals should align with who you are. Make them resonate with your core values and beliefs. To do this, take the time to ponder and write down the things that make you who you are. Then, pick relevant goals that are in harmony with what you believe in and value.

T) → Timeframed:

Goals must have a time frame in order to be achievable. When do you propose to achieve this goal? Don’t just say you want to get a house in the future or become wealthy in the next few years. You have to choose a definite date on the calendar, and pen it down as part of your goal. Circle the date and set up reminders with your phone or any app on a daily, weekly or monthly basis as the case may be. Then, do whatever it takes to achieve it.

This way, you can chart your progress to determine how far or close you are to achieving that goal.

E) → Evaluated

Goal setting is an ongoing activity therefore selects a system or build reminders to keep yourself in check. Review your goals every single day preferably early hours in the morning or in the night before going to bed. In doing this, you will be able to gauge your success.

You cultivate a healthier lay of the land when you evaluate your goals. However, when you neglect to chart your growth, it’s easier to overlook things and you’re more likely to revert back to negative forms and bad habits.

R) → Rearrange your methods

Rearrange your methods of accomplishing your goals. If you weigh your growth, and you recognize that you’re moving noticeably away from your goals instead of being nearer to them, you can rearrange your methods. This offers you a chance to modify and improve on things.

2. Make an action Plan

Secondly, your goals need to be planned and acted upon in a correct and precise way. The highest difficulty that many individuals face is that they fail to set their goals in a right and precise way. Besides, once they do set their goals, they approach them in the wrong way.

The best way to achieve any goal in life is to not only set them the right and precise way, but also to plan and execute their actions in accordance with achieving those dreams over time.

  • Cultivate serious self-discipline: Certainly, accomplishing any goal entails dire self-discipline. It encompasses a consciousness of our actions and activities as well as the ability to overpower some of the ill habits that might be holding us back.
  • Keep going by taking a step at a time: If you don’t achieve some of your anticipations or minor tasks, don’t feel disappointed. Situations beyond our control do occur and may sometimes disrupt our activities. Nonetheless, with thoughtful and careful creation of your goals, priorities, attainable tasks, and action items, including selection of accountability partners will position you for success despite setbacks.
  • Never make excuses, give it your greatest efforts – take responsibility, try harder and do your best.
  • Keep practicing –you might make mistake or fail but keep practicing to stay on top of your goals.
  • Search for different ways to get your jobs done– if you find it is too difficult to do, what could you do differently?
  • Build upon your strengths – if something is working.
  • Ask someone how to do it better – ask people for suggestions. Learn how others have done it through books, research or online articles or groups.
  • Review and fix any mistakes. – check what isn’t working and fix it.

Don’t give up. Keep trying before you will know it, 2020 will come to an end and you will be celebrating your accomplishments.

10 Strategies to Overcome Procrastination

Procrastination is a confrontation everybody has encountered at one point or another and it will continue to occur. For the time that humans exist, we have been struggling with postponing, dodging, and delaying on issues that matter to us.

What is Procrastination?

Procrastination is the act, behavior or habit of postponing, delaying or avoiding a task or set of tasks that need(s) to be done within a certain deadline.

Why do We Procrastinate

There are lots of reasons why we do procrastinate. However, majority procrastinate because of “feelings” . However, feeling is not reality.

  • They want to have perfect mood, timing and conditions. “This can be good when done with purpose and wisdom”. However, procrastination is not really about perfectionism but the ability to act immediately as it urges.
  • They feel like taking action could be dangerous or they feel like a different activity would be more comfortable and enjoyable or less frustrating. “This leads to a mediocre life”.
  • They feel like they don’t have enough energy to take on the task at hand.

Ways to Beat Procrastination

  1. Take small regular and important steps:

Taking the initial step is usually the most difficult part of a process. Most times, you might not be sure about the best direction to take and therefore be tempted to wait until the entire road map is available or the timing is perfect in order to begin.

By thinking too highly of the beginning point you might end up not taking any action. Think about all the positive outcomes and possibilities that you want. Remember that many other people have been at the very same starting point that you are in and they took the plunge and dove into action.

The truth however, is that you don’t have to start big to succeed. Don’t try to grow too quickly. Make incremental changes and improvements over time. Don’t try to do too much at once. Don’t try to jump in one big leap. Work on one piece at a time improving and evolving as you go, and don’t be afraid to start small.

2. Focus on the Steps and the Reward

Don’t look at how big what you want to achieve is but focus on the small steps that you are taking. Concentrate on the dividends of the outcome.

3. Make a To-Do list

Make a simple list

If you already know ahead of time all the tasks that need completion by the end of the day, make a to-do list first thing in the morning. This can be done with paper or apps such as Todoist, Things,,…… etc. Choose something that speaks to you.

  • visualize how much time each task will take you
  • if you don’t have an external deadlines, create a deadline for yourself.
  • get started with a few that are easy and obvious, such as Work, Personal, and Household.
  • make more than one list. This will help you to focus
  • when any task pops into your head, write it on your to-do list as quickly as possible.
  • when a task has a due date, add it. Due dates help you prioritize.
  • make maximum of three and five tasks per day

4. Prioritize the least favorite task

Put the task you’re most likely to push down to the bottom of the list, at the top. Categorize your tasks based on importance (how much it matters), urgent (how soon it needed to be done), and significance (how long or whether it matters).

  • Significant, Important and urgent: Do these tasks right away.
  • Significant and Important but not urgent: Decide when to do these tasks.
  • Urgent but not important: Delegate these tasks if possible.
  • Urgent but not significant: Turn over if possible.
  • Not urgent, not significant and not important: Set these aside to do later.

In prioritizing my tasks, I always prefer urgent to significant and I prefer significant tasks over important ones.

5. Time yourself

Good time management will enable you to complete more in a shorter period of time and lowers your stress level. Setting time constraints for completing tasks will help you to be more focused and efficient.

Learn when your high-energy time is and utilize it.

Take a break between tasks to clear your head and refresh yourself. Consider grabbing a brief nap, going for a short walk, or meditating.

6. Probe the reasons you procrastinate and deal with them

7. Be kind to yourself

One fact that cannot be denied is that we all constantly face challenges and pressure that tends to break us down. Sometimes you may feel guilty of your poor performance. Please, don’t always get down on yourself.

In fact, you need to detach sometimes to nourish your mind, soul and body and replenish your source.

8. Turn off from all distractions

Switch off your phones when you are working on a task. Avoid social media and networking sites unless the task has to do with them. Keep away from any environment or external stimuli that could distract you.

9. Get someone to hold you accountable on specific tasks

It could be your spouse or a friend. You can have one person for each specific project or task that you want to achieve. You can meet up in person. You can speak on the phone or online. You can even text each other on a regular basis. It is totally up to you.

10. Reward yourself

Give yourself a little reward every time you tick off a box on your To-Do list.

I always like to cook for myself one of my favorite meals to enjoy.
